Notes
- Read the pattern completely before you start.
- Full YouTube tutorial for the pumpkins : here
- The use of different supplies from that indicated may vary the final rendering. You don’t have to use the same brand of yarn but the gauge has to be the same for a similar result.
- For a result similar to the original cactus, it is important to read the pattern at each step so as not to skip instructions given for a specific row. The model requires careful counting of rows and stitches.
- Also, don’t hesitate to contact me here if you notice any mistake in the tutorial, thank you 🥰
- Check the size of the hook indicated before each elements.
- The numbers placed in parentheses correspond to the number of stitches to have when finishing the row. This allows you to know if it was done correctly. If you have more than the number indicated, it means that you have added stitches. Conversely, if you lack it, you have forgotten it.
- The letters (a,b,c…) at the end of sentences correspond to the pictures.
- Avoid waste by mixing your cut threads with the stuffing.
- When it is indicated “classic finish “, it means: Cut the thread and pass it through the loop to make a knot.
- When it is indicated ‘’ invisible finish‘’, it means : Cut the thread, pass it through the loop to make a knot and then, create a ‘’ fake stitch ‘’ to make it invisible. ( please refer to this video : here )

The pumpkin stem
- For pumpkins 1,3 & 4, draw a line 2 inches from the border (a)
- For pumpkins 2, 5 & 6, draw a line 3 inches from the border
- Cut on the line (b)
- Then cut vertically to open the circle (c,d)
- Roll it up on itself (e) until the tube measures about 0.6 inches in diameter ( pumpkins 1,3 & 4 ) and about 0.9 inches in diameter ( pumpkins 2,5 & 6 )
- Add tape to keep the roll in place (f)
- Cut notches on the bottom of the tube (g) then spread them apart. It creates a base (h).
- With a brush, apply glue along the tube (avoid the base) (a).
- Tie the twine with a knot near the base (b).
- Wrap it all around the tube (c).
- Tie a knot with another piece of twine (d).
- Put some glue on your finger (e) and roll the twine around the knot to create a spiral (f).
- Put glue on top of the tube (g) and add the spiral. That will close the tube (h).
The pumpkin’s leaf
For pumpkins 1, 3 and 4
Ro0 : 15 ch + 1 ch ( to turn )
Turn your work and skip the turning chain
Ro1 : 2 sc in each previous chain stitches (30)
Cut the thread and pass it through the loop to make a knot. Keep the remaining threads long enough to later attach it to the pumpkin.
For pumpkins 2, 5 and 6
Ro0 : 30 ch + 1 ch ( to turn )
Turn your work and skip the turning chain
Ro1 : 2 sc in each previous chain stitches (60)
Cut the thread and pass it through the loop to make a knot. Keep the remaining threads long enough to later attach it to the pumpkin.
The pumpkin ribs & assembly
There is a method with a single thread that passes several times through the pumpkin to create ribs. But because our pumpkins are very thick and fluffy, a single thread is not enough to make the ribs visible, I’m going to show you another technique.
To show you how to create the pumpkin ribs, I will be using a white ball ( the threads are more visible than with fluffy yarn ) and orange cotton threads. For your creation, use yarn the same color as your pumpkin.
Start by inserting a thread all the way around the last round of stitches you made (a). This thread will be used to tighten around the pumpkin stem.
Pass the thread through the pumpkin from top to bottom (b).
- Create a first rib with this thread (a) and tie a knot with the two ends under the pumpkin (b).
- Then, take another thread and join the two ends ( it creates a loop ) (c). Pass it through the pumpkin exactly where you passed the first thread (d).
- Insert the ends into the loop (e) and pull on it. This will make the rib even more visible (e). Then, tie a knot with the first and second threads (g).
- Cut the ends and hide them in the pumpkin with a thin hook (a).
- Do this 5 more times to create 6 equal parts (b).
- Insert the stem in the pumpkin (c), add some glue around it to keep it place (d).
- Pull on the threads that you first inserted and tie a knot to block the stem (e).
- Then, near the stem, insert the threads of the leaf (f), pass them through the pumpkin and tie a knot .
