Hiiii Pumpkinsss ! Because Halloween is in a week, I concocted a free minion crochet pattern ( just for you ) to make Kevin the minion ! I know his costume is really scary but don’t worry he’s vegetarian ! Enough dad’s joke, let’s get started !
Crochet pattern pdf file ( ad free )
For more convenience and to support my blog you can choose to purchase the printable PDF file of the minion crochet pattern ( ad free and more detailed pictures ) on my Etsy shop, by clicking here.
You can also purchase at a reduced price the patterns bundle of the 3 minions : here
So, if you choose that option, huge, huge THANK YOU for your support, I can keep making my crochet patterns thanks to you 🙂
But, you can also decide to follow the minion crochet pattern directly on my blog, so let’s get started !
Some notes before starting
- Read the minion crochet pattern completely before you start and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or feedbacks, I will be happy to answer them ( contact me : here )
- In the making, I do use craft glue to keep pieces together. Feel free to sew elements if you don’t want to use glue.
- For a result similar to the original minion, it is important to read the pattern at each step so as not to skip instructions given for a specific row. The model requires careful counting of rows and stitches.
- Also, don’t hesitate to contact me here if you notice any mistake in the tutorial, thank you
- Check the size of the hook indicated at the top left of each page.
- The numbers placed in parentheses correspond to the number of stitches to have when finishing the row. This allows you to know if it was done correctly. If you have more than the number indicated, it means that you have added stitches. Conversely, if you lack it, you have forgotten it.
- The letters (a,b,c…) at the end of sentences correspond to the pictures.
- Avoid waste by mixing your cut threads with the stuffing.
- When it is indicated “classic finish “, it means: Cut the thread and pass it through the loop to make a knot.
- When it is indicated ‘’ invisible finish‘’, it means : Cut the thread, pass it through the loop to make a knot and then, create a ‘’ fake stitch ‘’ to make it invisible. ( please refer to this video : here )
Difficulty, stitches and techniques used
Level of difficulty : Easy ( the only stitch that is a little bit complicated is the double crochet, you can learn how to make it : here )
Stitches and techniques : double crochet stitch, single crochet, chain stitch, slip stitch, increase, decrease, back loop only, slip stitch
For more details about the different crochet stitches and techniques, watch my YouTube videos : here
If you are a beginner with chenille yarn, I suggest you to watch my video ‘’ start crocheting chenille yarn ‘’ : here
List of supplies
The use of different supplies from that indicated may vary the final rendering. You don’t have to use the same brand of yarn but the gauge has to be the same for a similar result.
- Hooks : 8mm (L11) and 9mm (N11) : crochet kit here
- Yarns ( click on the color to be linked to Amazon. No link means that I bought at the yarn Joann or Michaels ). Also, as long as the yarn gauge is respected, you can pick the yarn ball of the brand you prefer ( the result will be similar in term of proportions ).
Color | Number of balls | Brand and Name | Weight & length of 1 ball | Gauge | Use in the pattern |
Yellow (buttercup or sunshine sparkle) | 1 | Bernat classic baby blanket or sparkle | 10.5 oz / 220 yds | 6 | Full minion body |
Grey (misty gray) | 1* | Bernat baby velvet | 10.5 oz / 492 yds | 4 | Goggles |
White | 1** | Bernat baby blanket | 3.5 oz / 72 yds | 6 | eyes |
Black (1810) | 1** | Estako velvet | 3.5 oz / 132 yds | 5 | Vampire’s cape |
Red (1510) | 1** | Estako velvet | 3.5 oz / 132 yds | 5 | Vampire’s cape |
Black ( coal ) | 1** | Bernat Blanket | 3.5 oz / 72 yds | 6 | Goggle’s strap, gloves & shoes |
Grey ( frosted blue ) | 1** | Bernat baby blanket | 10.5 oz / 220 yds | 6 | Overalls |
*To make the thread thicker for the pattern, I took the 2 ends of the ball and crocheted the 2 threads at the same time. I used less than one ball.
** You will need less than one ball.
- 2 black buttons ( 0.8 inch diameter )
- 2 safety eyes ( with red or brown iris ), 20 mm : here.
- Polyester fiber fill type Poly-fill ( less than 12 ounces )
- Grey, black and white cotton thread, for the smile and to sew the elements together : here
- Darning needles. They are from the crochet kit listed at the top of the page and a sewing needle to sew the buttons.
- Round counter : here
- Stitch markers.
- 2 cardboard rounds of 1.6 inches diameter ( 4 cm ) and craft glue ( for example Elmer’s craft bond ) : here

Body
Hook 9mm
Yellow yarn
R0 : magic ring
R1 : 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
R2 : 6 inc (12)
R3 : (1 sc, 1 inc) x6 (18)
R4 : (2 sc, 1 inc) x6 (24)

R36 : (4 sc, 1 dec) x6 (30)
R37 : (3 sc, 1 dec) x6 (24)
Insert a stitch marker on the last stitch to block the thread ( do not cut it ) because we are going to start assembling the elements together. Stuff the body to the top.
Assembly overall, feet, arms and goggles
Assemble and sew/glue the elements as shown in pictures.
For the arms, sew on R16’s double crochets, it will look like the end of the arm blends into the body.
For the goggles, make sure to glue or sew only the white part to the body. Not sewing the grey part creates relief.
Goggles strap
Hook 8mm
Black chenille yarn
Ro0 : 34 ch + 1 turning ch (a)
The number of ch depends on the stuffing of your minion. Check that the strap is long enough to go around the head starting from each side of the goggles (b,c).
If it’s too short, add some chain stitch. Conversely, if it’s too long remove some.
Then, turn your work, turning ch becomes first stitch (1) of the row, SKIP ch 34 and start crocheting in ch 33 of Ro0.
Ro1 : 1 sc in each stitch (34)
Classic finish (d)
Then, sew the strap to the body with black cotton thread.
Smile and teeth
The smile will be placed where indicated by the two pins (a).
With a long darning needle, insert the black thread where one of the pins is and bring it out where the other is (b).
Tie a knot (c).
Pass one of the thread again in the same place (d). Pull lightly on it until the knot disappears. You now have threads on both sides ( future teeth ) (e).
Then, pull the main line down a row to create an arc. To make it stay in place, make a knot with thin sewing thread at the bottom of the smile ( has to be almost invisible ) (f).
The smile is done (g).
Assembly of cape
Sew the cape to the body where the arrow point ( 2 stitches are enough to keep it in place ) (a, b, c )
Then, wrap a black chenille thread around the body.
With a darning needle, pass it through where you sewed the cape ( on both sides )(d,e).
It will come out the other side. Tie a nice knot on the front (f).
Body
Hook 9mm
Yellow yarn
R38 : (2 sc, 1 dec) x6 (18)
R39 : (1 sc, 1 dec) x6 (12)
R40 : 6 dec (6)
Leave 6 in. of thread then cut it.
Pass the thread through the loop to tie a knot.
With the thread and a darning needle, pass through the previous 6 stitches to close the circle.
Hide the thread in the head with the needle and then cut what is left.
Hair
Cut the pipe cleaner to have three small strand. Fold them in half (a).
Wind them on themselves to form a finer thread (b).
Place them on the top of the head (c), making sure that the metal parts are pushed in and that they are not coming out. Add some glue to keep them in place
