  • Read this Easter Chick free crochet pattern completely before you start and if you have any questions or feedback, I will be happy answer them ( contact me : here )
  • Dimensions : The chubby chick 1 measures approx. 8” (20 cm) high and 6” (15 cm) wide. The chubby chick 2 measures approx. 5” (12,7 cm) high and 4.5” (11,5 cm) wide.
  • In the making, I do use craft glue to keep some pieces together. Feel free to sew elements if you don’t want to use glue.
  • All my creations are crocheted using the yarn over technique and I work each round in spiral.
  • The use of different supplies from that indicated may vary the final rendering. You don’t have to use the same brand of yarn but the gauge has to be the same for a similar result.
  • For a result similar to the original plushie, it is important to read each step of the pattern carefully so you don’t skip instructions given for a specific row (or round). The model requires careful counting of rows and stitches.
  • Also, don’t hesitate to contact me at crochetpinkpumpkin@gmail.com if you notice any mistakes in the tutorial, thank you
  • The numbers placed in parentheses correspond to the number of stitches to have when finishing the row or round. This allows you to know if it was done correctly. If you have more than the number indicated, it means that you have added stitches. Conversely, if you have less than the indicated amount you may have skipped stitches.
  • The letters (a,b,c…) at the end of sentences correspond to the pictures.
  • Avoid waste by mixing your cut threads with the stuffing.

Dimensions

  • The size of your Easter chick can differ according to the tightness of your stitches.
  • The use of different supplies from that indicated in the Easter chick free crochet pattern may vary the final rendering. You don’t have to use the same brand of yarn but the weight category and hook size have to be the same for a similar result ( in term of proportion ).

  • Thin yellow cotton yarn, for the hair (chick 1) and to sew the elements together : here. If you would like to save some time and don’t like sewing, you can also hot glue the elements together with a glue gun (here) or craft glue from Elmer’s (here)
( the bond is better with hot glue)
  • If you decide to sew : Darning needles (you can use regular darning needles but I like using curved ones from this kit : here , it’s easier to sew elements together.

Abbreviations

R : round
Sc: single crochet
Inc: increase

Dec: decrease

FLO : front loop only

Body & Head

CHICK 1 : HOOK 10 MM, JUMBO YELLOW YARN
CHICK 2 : HOOK 8 MM, SUPER BULKY YELLOW YARN WITH BULKY FLUFFY YARN

Start with a magic ring
R1 : 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
R2 : 6 inc (12)
R3 : (1 sc, 1 inc) x6 (18)
R4 : (2 sc, 1 inc) x6 (24)
R5 : (3 sc, 1 inc) x6 (30)
R6 – R8 : 1 sc in each stitch (30) (3 rounds)
R9 : (3 sc, 1 dec) x6 (24)
R10 : (2 sc, 1 dec) x6 (18)
R11 : FLO, (2 sc, 1 inc) x6 (24)
R12 : FLO, 1 sc in each stitch (24)
R13 : 1 sc in each stitch (24)

On R13, place a thread on the 10th sc and one on the 14th sc. This will help you to later place the safety eyes.

R14 : 1 sc in each stitch (24)
R15 : (2 sc, 1 dec) x6 (18)

Place the safety eyes between R13 and R14 where the threads are with 3 stitches between them. If you notice that the safety eyes are not positioned like in the picture (a,b), or not aligned, don’t hesitate to reposition them. It can be slightly different because of difference of tension. Then, remove the threads once the eyes are properly placed.
Start stuffing the chick.

R16 : (1 sc, 1 dec) x6 (12)
Finish stuffing
R17 : 6 dec (6)

Leave 6” (15 cm) of thread, then cut it.
Pass the thread through the loop to tie a knot.
With the thread and a darning needle, pass through the front loops of the 6 previous stitches to close the circle. Hide the thread with a needle and then cut the excess.

Arms x2

CHICK 1 : HOOK 10 MM, JUMBO YELLOW YARN
CHICK 2 : HOOK 8 MM, SUPER BULKY YELLOW YARN WITH BULKY FLUFFY YARN

Start with a magic ring
R1 : 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
R2 : (1 sc, 1 inc) x3 (9)

Invisible finish.
Repeat the same steps for the second arm (a,b).

Assembly

BEAK

With the orange chunky yarn, embroider the beak between the eye. I passed the yarn back and forth twice to make the beak thicker. Hide the ends in the head (a,b)

ARMS

Then, sew/glue the arms on the sides of the body (c,d,e) and you can add a little bit of stuffing to make then puffier.
If you sew, it will be easier for you to use the curved darning needles listed in the supplies. Also, I recommend to use wooden sticks to place all the elements first, and then, glue/sew them.

FEET

The feet are placed on R4 (a,c), they cover 4 stitches (b) and there are 3 stitches between them (c).
Use about 27’’ (68 cm) for chick 1 or 12” (30 cm) for chick 2 of orange yarn for each of the foot and with a darning needle, pass the yarn back and forth in 1 and 4 (b), several times to create a bump (b,c). Then, tie a knot and hide the ends. Chubby chick is almost done (d)

HAIR

I chose to do hair for chick 1 only. I liked the design of chick 2 without hair.
But it’s totally up to you 🙂
Use 3 small pieces of thin yellow cotton yarn, pass them through the stitch on top of the head and tie knots (a). Cut them to make sure they are the same length. Little hair cut 🙂
