Some notes before starting

© This document is the property of crochetpinkpumpkin. Do not sell, copy or distribute the pattern itself.
You may sell finished products made with this Yoshi free crochet pattern as long as crochetpinkpumpkin is credited as the designer.

  • Read Yoshi free crochet pattern completely before you start and if you have any questions or feedback, I will be happy answer them ( contact me : here )
  • In the making, I do use craft glue to keep some pieces together. Feel free to sew elements if you don’t want to use glue.
  • The use of different supplies from that indicated may vary the final rendering. You don’t have to use the same brand of yarn but the gauge has to be the same for a similar result.
  • For a result similar to the original plushie, it is important to read each step of the pattern carefully so you don’t skip instructions given for a specific row (or round). The model requires careful counting of rows and stitches.
  • Also, don’t hesitate to contact me at crochetpinkpumpkin@gmail.com if you notice any mistakes in the tutorial, thank you
  • Check the size of the hook indicated at the top left of each page.
  • The numbers placed in parentheses correspond to the number of stitches to have when finishing the row or round. This allows you to know if it was done correctly. If you have more than the number indicated, it means that you have added stitches. Conversely, if you have less than the indicated amount you may have skipped stitches.
  • The letters (a,b,c…) at the end of sentences correspond to the pictures.
  • Avoid waste by mixing your cut threads with the stuffing.

Dimensions

  • Yoshi measures approx. 12 inches high and 10 inches wide.
  • The size of your Yoshi can differ according to the tightness of your stitches.
  • The use of different supplies from that indicated in Yoshi free crochet pattern may vary the final rendering. You don’t have to use the same brand of yarn but the weight category and hook size have to be the same for a similar result ( in term of proportion ).

Difficulty, stitches and techniques used

  • Level of difficulty : Easy
  • Stitches and techniques : single crochet, chain stitch, slip stitch, increase, decrease, back loop, front loop.
  • For more details about the different crochet stitches and techniques, watch my YouTube videos : here
  • If you are a crochet beginner with chenille yarn and want to make Yoshi, I suggest you to watch my video ‘’ start crocheting chenille yarn ‘’ : here
  • When it is indicated “classic finish “, it means: Cut the thread, yarn over and pass it through the loop to make a knot.
  • When it is indicated ‘’ invisible finish‘’, it means : Cut the thread, yarn over, pass it through the loop to make a knot and then, create a ‘’ fake stitch ‘’ to make it invisible. ( please refer to this video : here )

Then, make 1 sc in each stitch along the 3 edges indicated by the arrows (a).
Classic finish.

Then place the belly in the middle of the body. Sew the contours of the white part so it blends to the green part (b). Also, I first added some glue at the center to make sure it stayed in place.

Head

Hook 9mm (M13)
Green or pink chenille yarn

R0 : magic ring
R1 : 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
R2 : 6 inc (12)
R3 : (1 sc, 1 inc) x6 (18)
R4 : (2 sc, 1 inc) x6 (24)
R5 : (3 sc, 1 inc) x6 (30)

R14 : (2 sc, 1 dec) x6 (18)
Stuff the head
R15 : (1 sc, 1 dec) x6 (12)
R16 : 6 dec

Leave 6 in. of thread then cut it. Pass the thread through the loop to tie a knot.
With the thread and a darning needle, pass through the previous 6 stitches to close the circle. Hide the thread with the needle and then cut what exceeds (a).

Eyes

Hook 8mm (L11)
Green or pink chenille yarn

We will make 2 eyes : E1 and E2
I placed markers in the pictures to make the stitches more visible.

E1 :

R0 : magic ring
R1 : 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
R2 : 6 inc (12)
R3 : 1 sc in each stitch (12)
Invisible finish (a)

E2 :

R0 : magic ring
R1 : 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
R2 : 6 inc (12)
R3 : 1 sc in each stitch (12) (b)

Attach E2 to one of the 12 stitches surrounding E1 with a sc (c). Make 11 sc around E1 . Then, make a sc in the stitch of E2 facing the last sc you made (d). Make 11 sc around E2 (e). You now have 24 stitches.

If there is a small hole between the eyes, you can sew a stitch with cotton yarn to close it (f).
R4 > R5: 1 sc in each stitch (24) (2 rounds)
R6 : 5 sc, 2 inc, 10 sc, 2 inc, 5 sc (28)

Invisible finish (g) and stuff the eyes.

Cut the white felt to have a rectangle of 2.3 in x 4.5 in. Fold it in half and cut following the black line in the picture (a,b). Once this is done, you can round out the edges by trimming a little more felt to make them smoother (c,d).

Cut the black felt to have 2 rectangles of 0.7 in x 1.2 in (a). Cut the rectangles to create an ‘’egg‘’ shape (b).
Once this is done, you can round out the edges by trimming a little more felt to make them smoother.

Lastly cut the white felt to have two very small rounds of 0.1 in diameter (c). Don’t worry, they don’t have to be perfectly round.

Glue the pieces together as shown in the picture (d).

Assembly

Assemble and sew/glue the elements as shown in pictures. If you sew, it will be easier for you to use the curved darning needles listed in the supplies. Also, I recommend to pin all the elements first, and then, glue/sew them.

Then, sew/glue the head to the body and place the elements as seen in the pictures.
When sewing the cheeks, add a little bit of stuffing to make then puffier.

When sewing the shell and the spikes, add a little bit of stuffing to make then puffier.
